The problem with procrastinating on those jobs, however, is when you find out the job is even bigger than you thought. If left to long, it may even need immediate attention. and if you let it go too long, it could get to the point where it needs immediate attention.

The first thing every chimney owner learns is the importance of having your chimney cleaned and inspected on an annual basis – or more often if you use your fireplace a lot. It’s also important to make sure that the sweep you hire has the best certification possible. Do you know what it is that your chimney sweep is actually looking for? First and foremost, they’ll be looking for creosote buildup. This nasty buildup is actually a byproduct of the smoke from your fire, and it can cause some major damage because it is flammable. If you let the creosote build up to a thick layer (actually, thicker than ⅛ of an inch is too much), you could be in danger of a chimney fire. A chimney fire is a devastating occurrence that can cause a lot of damage, but sometimes it can be smaller and less noticeable; in fact, sometimes people have a chimney fire without even noticing it. This is a real danger because it can cause structural damage, and that could mean even more damage if you continue to use your fireplace.
Don’t Procrastinate!
It’s easy to think that you have plenty of time to call for that inspection and cleaning. The problem with waiting is that, just like you, most other people are putting that job off as well. Additonally, if you wait, you chance the problem getting worse to where you can’t use your fireplace in the winter.
