When you think of a chimney sweep company, you probably think about getting your chimney inspected or cleaned. Black Velvet Chimney does those jobs right. We have been doing this job for over twenty years, so we have experience and expertise to put into every inspection and cleaning we do. If you have chimney or fireplace repair or rebuild work, we can do that as well. But there’s another thing that we do very well, and that’s dryer vent cleaning.
How Often Should Dryer Vents Be Cleaned?
You don’t often think about your dryer vents being cleaned professionally. Most of us think that when we clean out the lint tray after every load of clothes or two, we’ve done all we need to do to keep our dryer vents clean. That’s not the case. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends that you have your dryer vents professionally cleaned on an annual basis.
Why Have Your Vents Professionally Cleaned?
Your dryer is designed specially to dry your clothes. The drum has spokes in it so when the drum spins, your clothes are carried in a cycle in the drum. Meanwhile, warm air is being blown through your dryer drum to dry clothes as they spin. As this happens, tiny particles, or lint, are blown off the clothes and are then filtered out, carried on the warm air as it flows out through the dryer vent. As it passes through the lint screen, most of the lint is caught. However, some of the lint escapes through and gets carried into the dryer vent. The sides of your dryer vent easily catch moist lint. There it can build up and make air circulation harder.
Another problem with your dryer venting system getting clogged by lint is that it is hard on the motor of your dryer. This can cause your dryer to run less efficiently, which can in turn make your energy bills higher. Even more seriously, your full dryer vents can be a fire hazard. That lint buildup is highly flammable, and if a spark from your dryer floats through, it can catch in the lint and spark a major fire.
