Black Velvet Chimney did a Great job. They removed all of the stone, removed the mantle, old firebox and chimney. They then installed a new box, chimney and mantle all in One Day. Installation of the new stone was done a short time later and was completed in 2 days. They did a Great job.
I highly recommend these folks.

What Are the Parts of My Chimney & Fireplace?

When it comes to chimney systems, there are some basic components that most chimneys have…

  1. Chimney Flue Liner: This is the vertical channel that helps gas, fumes, and other combustion byproducts safely exit the chimney and stay out of your home. Liners add an additional layer of protection for your home against the high temperatures that result from using your fireplace, wood stove, or furnace.
  2. Chimney Cap: Chimney caps are what you typically see at the very top of your chimney. They are usually made of copper or stainless steel and can be custom designed to meet your needs. They act as barriers to keep unwanted water, outside debris, and pests out of your chimney and home. They also serve as a spark guard that protects your roof from hot embers.
  3. Chimney Crown: Crowns are the cement slab at the top of your chimney. They should have a downward slope that helps to deter water from entering your chimney system.
  4. Chimney Flashing: Flashing are the metal pieces you will see at the base of your chimney where it meets your roof shingles. Flashing acts as another layer of protection for your roof and chimney against water entry.
  5. Smoke Chamber: The smoke chamber is located between your chimney flue and damper. The smoke chamber’s job is to compress and funnel combustion byproducts before they exit through your chimney flue liner.
  6. Damper: The damper has metal flaps located above the firebox that must be opened before you start a fire in your fireplace. When you are not having a fire, keeping the damper doors closed helps prevent heat loss and downdrafts.

Each component of your chimney system serves an important role in helping your chimney work effectively and keeping you and your family safer.
